What is Strong Towns?

A broken development pattern is bankrupting Edmonton and endangering your neighborhood. We are working to steer the citye away from decline and toward prosperity.

Learn the importance of productive growth, the power of resilience, and the value of quality over quantity, all while addressing real challenges in real communities.

What is Strong Towns

Strong Towns is replacing America’s postwar pattern of development, the Suburban Experiment, with a pattern of development that is financially strong and resilient. We advocate for cities of all sizes to be safe, livable and inviting. We elevate local government as the highest level of collaboration for people working together in a place, not merely the lowest level in a hierarchy of governments.

The 5 Priorities

To accelerate change, we are focusing our efforts on the following five priority campaigns:

  1. Ending Highway Expansion
  2. Transparent Local Accounting
  3. Incremental Housing
  4. Safe & Productive Streets
  5. End Parking Mandates & Subsidies

The 6 Core Principles

  1. Financial solvency is a prerequisite for long-term prosperity
  2. Land is the base resource from which community prosperity is built and sustained. It must not be squandered.
  3. A transportation system is a means of creating prosperity in a community, not an end in itself.
  4. Job creation and economic growth are the results of a healthy local economy, not substitutes for one.
  5. Strong cities, towns, and neighborhoods cannot happen without strong citizens (people who care).
  6. Local government is a platform for Strong Citizens to collaboratively build a prosperous place.
